. also pulitzer prize winning historian jon meacham. we have three weeks to go until election day. and tonight, obviously, is the big debate. it's going to be a town hall-style debate. and some new polls are out. let's take a look at, again, we've got a shift possibly in the electoral map. this morning, a new "usa today" gallup poll shows growing momentum for mitt romney in the key battleground states, including ohio, florida, and virginia. the poll has romney pulling ahead by four points among likely voters. 50% to 46%. this is obviously a big shift. it's only one poll. but perhaps the bigger take away from this poll and some others is how the candidates are ranking among likely woman voters in those battleground states. we've heard an awful lot about the gender gap since the primary season, but among likely female voters in swing states, mitt romney's pulling almost even with the president. 48% to 49%, among male voters in the swing states, romney has an eight-point lead over the president. mark, let's start with you. you're reporting right now that senior democratic officials a

continued even until yesterday on the daily show with jon stewart the president continues to have trouble explaining what happened and explaining how he managed to talk about this in the way that he did. so, yeah, you'd have to say that libya is at the heart of that big drop. megyn: it's amazing what a difference that issue is starting to have in this election, because the same polling group did a poll on foreign policy about a week ago and asked about everything from china, to iran, to egypt, and let me just give you some of the numbers. it shows the two candidates about deadlocked on who would better handle iran. a slight edge for the president when it comes to who would handle egypt better. slowed a slight edge -- stronger edge to romney and who would handle china better and get tough on trade with china the issue of libya seems to be the thing that narrowed this gap from 11-point advantage to barack obama to 4-point advantage. while it was somewhat of a debacle the other night, one person said one and the other person challenged back and forth and the moderator tried to stop it and ev

to be a smaller version of the ipad, call it the ipad mini. we go to jon fortt in silicon valley for more on today's main event. >> reporter: right behind me is where the action will take place. we're expecting a mini ipad. apple hasn't said exactly what this is. what would be the big deal over a smaller ipad? this would be the biggest new product announcement in about almost the past three years. not in the sense that it's bigger revenue wise, probably than an iphone but in terms of a new design and a risk apple is taking, a smaller ipad would be part of that. steve jobs said he wasn't in favor of such a thing at seven inches. of course we expect this could be closer to eight inches than seven based on a lot of the buzz out there. we have to wait and see. you could take a look at the products that apple has put out over the past few years as you've seen the stock do this amazing run since the iphone, this would be another product on that line-up so a question, will this be like another mac mini which close less than the mainstream imac but helped to bolster apple's overall product line or the ipo

a caricature on the talk shows, you know, when you want to get a quick laugh, david letterman or jon stewart, they invoke joe biden. on the other hand, in fairness to him as well as to paul ryan, these are two irish catholic political warriors who come from different generations. both athletic. they both have a passion about what they're doing. and my own guess is at the end of the evening, one of the tests of a vice presidential debate is, can they handle the presidency? do we want them to be a heartbeat away? and i think in both cases, people would have to say you can have them in that job, and if something happens to the president, they could step it up. that was my judgment. >> mark, a lot of times these vp debates show that one is not ready to pass that threshold test last night, there's no doubt. joe biden has been in washington since he was 29. >> yeah. this was a threshold test. biden's obviously passed it. he's been there. it was a real threshold test for ryan. to your point about biden, you're right, people that know him like him, generally. but a lot of people watching didn't know
